The need for insect repellents
In many regions of the world, diseases, such as malaria, yellow fever, borreliosis (Lyme disease) or tickborne encephalitis are transmitted by insects. Malaria alone causes up to 3 million deaths annually and approximately 2000 cases are brought back to the UK each year.

The risk of being infected by biting insects is not the only reason to protect ourselves as mosquitoes and flies can turn any outdoor activity, such as a sports event, a fishing tour, a camping trip or just a family barbecue into an unpleasant experience.

Attempts to control or even eradicate insects worldwide have been largely unsuccessful and probably ecologically unsound. Drug prophylaxis and vaccination can reduce the risk of insect transmitted diseases, but they only protect against the disease and not against the insect bites.

Repellents provide effective, convenient and safe protection against insect bites and consequently have a very important part to play in consumer health care markets around the world. When applied correctly to the skin, repellents have a significant role in reducing transmittable diseases and reducing the unpleasant effects of nuisance biters.
